The Training

1 October, 2009:

After I got my learner’s license, the process went like this.

I contacted one of the Q Ride Training providers and went along for my very first lesson.  This didn’t go so well - I didn’t gel with the trainer at all.

She was, what are the words……arrogant and rude.

The trainer had a very “Them and Us” kind of attitude where I was felt to feel like I was a stupid learner who was an inconvenience.  The bikes they had seemed pretty old and the training was straight out onto a public road.

A few days later I contacted Australian Motorcycle Academy in Lawrence Drive, Nerang.

The difference was amazing.

These guys were very professional and very friendly from the very start.  They love what they do and it shows.

How They Were Different

Here’s an example that had them miles ahead of the other training company.

When I walked in everyone was very friendly.  My instructor (Tony) was there and introduced himself and we had a chat about why I wanted to learn to ride a motorbike and what I’d be doing in terms of riding after I had my license.

It was the next thing that happened that showed the difference in the professionalism that has the Australian Motorcycle Academy head and shoulders above the rest.

What Gear You Need & Why

1st Trainer - “Grab a jacket, gloves and helmet over there and let’s get going.”

Tony said, “Okay Brendon, we’ll get our gear together and make a start.  But what I’ll do first is take you through what equipment you’ll be wearing, why we wear what we do, how to ensure the best fit for you and what to look for when you go to buy your own gear.”

For the next 10 minutes Tony explained the various options you have with jackets, gloves, helmets, pants and boots.

He worked from his own extensive experience with all this stuff, as well as his many years of being an instructor.

I Meet The Bike

Now I’m completely clueless about motorbikes and how they work.

Before the lesson started Tony got the motorbike out and went through everything on it.

He explained all the basic stuff that I didn’t have a clue about - from why you park the bike on an angle to how you start it, etc, etc.

Then it was onto the back of the bike as he rode us down to their fully enclosed and safe training area - a sealed car park they hire for their exclusive use.

More coming soon!
